Bracero to Bottle
How we got here
The Bracero Program brought millions of Mexican workers to the United States to fill labor shortages that resulted from World War II. This controversial program shaped the landscape of migrant workers for decades to come. You can dive a little deeper into history with this video from NBC News Learn.
One of these workers was Enrique Gallegos Senior from the small town of El Llano. With ambition and many talents, he sought out the Napa Valley to help with agriculture and establish roots in wine county. Enrique was a field worker for prominent Napa wineries such as Beringer and has earned much respect from colleagues and the community. He started his family in Napa Valley and today celebrates his legacy with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His son and grandson both work in vineyards & cellars in addition to launching Surcos.
Where we’re going
You might say that Surcos was always the dream for third-generation Luies Gallegos. From a young age, Luies had a fascination with Napa Valley and the craft of creating luscious, beautiful wines. As an adult, Luies immersed himself in winemaking, spending countless hours alongside winemakers and growers. With the knowledge he gained, and the passion his grandfather and father passed on to him, Luies decided it was time to make a family wine.
The Gallegos family started the business in 2019. After years of learning on the job, Luies made the first vintage of Surcos, and his first wine, as a winemaker. He takes great pride in his craft and his heritage. In 2021 Luies found LELI, Latinos en la Industria, to create a community of Latinos in the wine industry.
The Gallegos family continues to operate and produce wines with input from multiple generations. Luies is a devoted husband and wonderful father, taking time to share the family traditions and shape the next generation of Latino winemakers and wine industry heroes.
Surcos [soor-cose] is Spanish for vineyard rows
